15-year old weightlifter Tenishia Thornton has been named as the first winner of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Year. She won this prestigious award after a combined vote by a panel of three sports journalists and a public vote which was held online over the past weeks. Thornton was the only athlete in 2020 who managed to scoop two awards in March and November respectively. Upcoming football star Haley Bugeja was the overall runner up, followed by gymnast Tara Vella Clark to complete an all female podium. The presentation to Tenishia Thornton was made by Matthew Von Brockdorff CEO of Atlas Insurance. Malta Sports Journalists Association officials Sandro Micallef and Lorraine Cunningham were also present for the presentation. The President and the General Secretary of the Malta Sports Journalists Association Sandro Micallef and Lorraine Cunningham held talks with Opposition Leader Dr Bernard Grech. During the meeting which was held at the Opposition's Office in Parliament the MSJA officials explained the vision of the Association for the future of Sport in Malta. Dr Grech was presented also with a report including five concrete proposals which are being put forward by the MSJA to the competent authorities to be implemented in the near future. Il-President u s-Segretarja Ġenerali tal-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports Sandro Micallef u Lorraine Cunningham kellhom laqgħa mal-Kap tal-Oppożizzjoni u tal-Partit Nazzjonalista Dr Bernard Grech. Waqt il-laqgħa li saret fl-uffiċċju tal-Opożizzjoni fil-Parlament l-uffiċjali tal-GħĠS spjegaw il-viżjoni tal-Assoċjazzjoni dwar il-futur tal-Isport f'pajjiżna. Dr Grech kien ippreżentat ukoll b'rapport li kien jinkludi l-ħames proposti li l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports qed tinsisti li jkunu implimentati fil-futur qarib. Il-President tal-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports Sandro Micallef emfażizza li l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports illum il-ġurnata saret rilevanti bi tmexxija proattiva fejn l-Assoċjazzjonijiet u l-Federazzjonijiet Sportivi lokali qed jirrikonoxxu li l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports saret stakeholder prinċipali fit-tfassil tal-politika tal-isport lokali. Din il-ħidma kontinwa mill-GħĠS qed isir qal Micallef, bil-għan aħħari jkun li l-Isport jitla' 'l fuq kemm jista’jkun fuq l-aġenda tal-pajjiż. As communicated earlier, the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance have officially launched the public voting for the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Year Award. The 11 young athletes that have claimed the monthly award during 2020 are now eligible to compete for the yearly award with a combined vote by the panel of journalists and the general public.
