Review of today’s FIFA Women’s World Cup matches by our intern Emilia Beutel

After fourteen days in the battle for a place in the last 16, the last two teams have now been determined. The German team falls behind early but catches up shortly before the break. Nevertheless, the 1-1 draw is not enough to put them in third place after the Moroccan women beat the favourites, Colombia.

After Germany’s 1-1 draw, they should have hoped for a Colombia win. But thanks to a strong performance by the Moroccans and Lahmari’s goal in first-half injury time, they defeated the previously unbeaten Colombians, thus also eliminating Germany, who had previously won 6-0 against Morocco. The Colombians are clearly unhappy, but they can keep their place at the top of the table. No one would have thought that the last matchday would turn out like this. So now Morocco faces France, and Colombia faces Jamaica. These matches will take place next Tuesday when they compete for a place in the quarterfinals.

After a day’s break, it’s back to the first match in the round of 16. There, Spain will face Switzerland. The kick-off is at 07:00, and the favourite so far in this match is Spain. But as the last few games have shown, anything can happen in the world of football. At 10:00, Japan plays against Norway.
