Review on yesterday’s FIFA Women’s World Cup matches by our intern Emilia Beutel

After a day of tough battles and nerve-wracking moments, one of the last group match days also came to an end.

In the game between Sweden and Argentina, favourites Sweden won 2-0. They had an interesting match, and Argentina fought till the end. Nevertheless, in the end, Sweden was the better team and deservedly entered the last 16 and will play against the USA.

In the second game of the day in this group, favourites Italy lose 3-2 to South Africa. South Africa completely turned the game from 2-2 to 3-2 in the last minutes of injury time, knocking Italy out of the World Cup. So South Africa will have to face the Netherlands in the next phase.

In the afternoon, Panama lost 3-6 against France, while the match between Jamaica and Brazil ended 0-0.

France was always the better team during the match and deserved to win. So, the French women can continue to show their talent in this competition.

Even though Brazil was the better team technically, the Brazilian women had more shots on goal than the Jamaicans and much more possession. You could even say that Jamaica was very lucky in this game, and so Jamaica made it to the last 16, as Brazil finished one point behind Jamaica.

Today is the last day of the Group Stage, where we’ll see the last two teams to qualify from Group H. The matches between Germany and Korea and Morocco and Colombia both start at noon.
