Visit Malta weekender 2026 ends in penalty drama as Strasbourg defeat Newcastle United

Newcastle United returned to action at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon facing French side RC Strasbourg in the third and final match of the Visit Malta Weekender 2026 in which game ended 1-1 and had to be decided by penalties. RC Strasbourg brought the Visit Malta Weekender 2026 to a winning conclusion after defeating Newcastle United 3-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes at St James’ Park. The encounter brought the curtain down on a busy two-day programme of international football at St James’ Park, which saw Newcastle United’s men’s and women’s teams face European opposition as part of their preparations for the new season. Inter Women claim victory over Newcastle in Visit Malta Weekender at St James’ Park

Newcastle United Women and Inter Women faced each other at St James’ Park on Sunday as part of the Visit Malta Weekender 2026, in an international friendly that also carried a special Maltese connection through Malta international Haley Bugeja, who featured for the Italian side. Playing at the iconic home of Newcastle United, both teams looked to make the most of the pre-season encounter, with Inter making the breakthrough in the 25th minute through Marie Detruyer, who opened the scoring for the Nerazzurre. In the 86th minute, Inter doubled their advantage through elisa Polli, who found the back of the net to make it 2-0 and put the Italian side firmly in control in the closing stages at St James’ Park. Malta Women’s Beach Handball National Team received MSJA Fair Play Award

The Malta Sports Journalists Association in collaboration with the Malta Fair Play Movement and Together Gaming, has selected the Malta Women’s Beach Handball National Team as the recipients for this quarterly between April - June Fair Play Award, presented as part of the organisations' ongoing initiative to recognise outstanding examples of sportsmanship and fair play in Maltese sport. The award, presented every three months, honours individuals or teams who embody the true values of sport through their conduct, integrity, respect for opponents and officials, and commitment to fair competition. The Malta Women’s Beach Handball National Team earned this recognition following their participation in the 2026 Calise Cup in Gaeta, Italy, where they were also presented with the tournament's Fair Play Award after finishing sixth overall. Throughout the competition, the Maltese squad demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship both on and off the sand, earning the respect of organisers, officials and fellow competitors. [...]

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Newcastle United 2-1 in the opening match of the Visit Malta Weekender taking place this weekend at St James Park Newcastle. Newcastle United welcomed German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen to St James’ Park in the opening match of the Visit Malta Weekender, as the Magpies continued their final preparations ahead of the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season. This was the third friendly match since German Manager Mathias Jaissle took over the team. The encounter was the first of three matches taking place at St James’ Park over the weekend, bringing together men’s and women’s football as part of a two-day programme supported by Visit Malta 2026.
