Matthew Zammit and Thea Parnis Coleiro are the first winners the Atlas Youth Athletes of the Month Award for 2025

Matthew Zammit (Table Tennis) and Thea Parnis Coleiro (Athletics) are the winners of January’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award.

Matthew Zammit, 14, won the Under-19 Youth Ranking Tournament organized by the Malta Table Tennis Association, defeating Luke Bonello 3-1 in an exciting final. It was a very entertaining match, with both players showcasing impressive form. On his path to victory, Zammit secured wins against Vladislav Lyksuh (3-1), Luke Fenech (3-2) and Gabriele Bianco (3-0).

Meanwhile, Thea Parnis Coleiro, 16, delivered an outstanding performance at the London Indoor Games, competing in the U20 category. She claimed second place in the 200m event while breaking the national U18 and U20 records. Additionally, she set a new national record in the 60m U18/U20 category and secured first place in Pre-Season 1. Her achievements not only stand atop the national rankings but also surpass those of more experienced athletes.

The Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award was presented to the winners by Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director and CEO together with Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer of Atlas Insurance. The Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by General Secretary Lorraine Cunningham and Administrator Stephen Azzopardi.

This award is a joint initiative of the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. The adjudicating panel of this award takes note of all the youths’ national and international achievements of the month under review, and at the same time, it invites local sport associations and federations to send in their nominations for consideration if they feel that any of their under-21 athletes have distinguished themselves during that month. All the monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.

Matthew Zammit (Table Tennis) u Thea Parnis Coleiro (Atletika) huma r-rebbieħa tal-Atlas Atleti Żgħażagħ tax-Xahar ta’ Jannar.

Matthew Zammit, li għandu 14-il sena, rebaħ ir-ranking tournament ta’ taħt id-19-il sena organizzat mill-Malta Table Tennis Association, wara li fil-finali għeleb lil Luke Bonello 3-1. Din il-finali kienet waħda ferm missielta, hekk kif iż-żewġ plejers żgħażagħ kienu f’forma mill-aqwa. Zammit wasal fil-finali wara li għeleb lil Vladislav Lyksuh 3-1, lil Luke Fenech 3-2 u lil Gabriele Bianco 3-0.

Min-naħa l-oħra, Thea Parnis Coleiro li għandha 16-il sena, ħadet sehem fil-kategoria ta’ taħt l-20 sena waqt il-London Indoor Games. Hija ġiet fit-tieni post fil-200 metru u kisret rekords nazzjonali fil-kategoriji ta’ taħt it-18 u l-20 sena. Hija kisret ukoll rekord nazzjonali fis-60 metru fil-kategoriji ta’ taħt it-18 u l-20 sena u ġiet fl-ewwel post fil-Pre-Season 1. Dawn is-suċċessi miksuba minn Thea Parnis Coleiro, mhux biss poġġewha fil-quċċata tar-rankings nazzjonali imma qabżet ukoll lill-atleti li huma aktar tal-esperjenza.

Il-preżentazzjoni tal-unur tal-Atlas Atleti Żgħażagħ tax-Xahar lir-rebbieħa saret minn Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director u CEO flimkien ma' Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer ta' Atlas Insurance. F’isem l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports kien hemm preżenti is-Segretarju Ġenerali Lorraine Cunningham u l-Amministratur Stephen Azzopardi.

Dan il-premju ta’ kull xahar jingħata b’inizjattiva konġunta bejn l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports flimkien ma’ Atlas Insurance. Il-panel li jiġġudika r-rebbieħa ta’ dan il-premju jieħu nota tas-suċċessi miksuba lokalment u internazzjonalment matul dak ix-xahar u fl-istess ħin jistieden lill-assoċjazzjonijiet u federazzjonijiet sportivi sabiex jibagħtu n-nomini tagħhom. In-nominazzjonijiet iridu jkunu għal atleti ta’ taħt il-21 sena.
